Bangladesh Crumble for 54 as Campbell Thompson Takes Stunning Eight-Wicket Haul
Bangladesh suffered a major setback in their preparations for the upcoming Test series against Australia after being bowled out for just 54 in a crushing warm-up defeat against a Cricket Australia XI in Darwin.
The tourists lost the three-day match by an innings and 38 runs, with young Australian fast bowler Campbell Thompson producing an outstanding spell of 8 wickets for just 25 runs.
The 22-year-old left-arm pacer proved almost impossible for Bangladesh's batting line-up to handle. Thompson had already taken two wickets late on the previous day before returning to dismantle the visitors on the final morning.
Bangladesh lost eight wickets for only 35 runs during the collapse, with opener Tanzid Hasan, who scored 22, the only batter to reach double figures in the second innings. Off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli claimed the other two wickets after also making an impact with six wickets in Bangladesh's first innings.
Wyllie Leads Strong CA XI Batting Display
Earlier, Teague Wyllie played a brilliant innings of 130 from 177 balls, helping Cricket Australia XI take control of the match.
Wyllie received strong support from wicketkeeper-batter Jake Doran, who scored 76, while captain Kurtis Patterson contributed 53.
Cricket Australia XI eventually reached 355 after Bangladesh had made 263 in their first innings, giving the home side a valuable 92-run advantage.
Bangladesh's first innings had provided some encouragement, particularly through all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who remained unbeaten on 109.
Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was another positive for the visitors, claiming 4/42 and removing all four of Cricket Australia XI's top-order batters.
Warning Sign Ahead of Australia Test
However, Bangladesh's dramatic second-innings collapse will be a major concern before facing Australia's Test attack.
The first Test between Australia and Bangladesh begins on August 13 in Darwin, followed by the second Test in Mackay from August 22. The two-match series forms part of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship.
For Thompson, meanwhile, the eight-wicket performance could significantly boost his growing reputation in Australian domestic cricket. Despite having very limited Sheffield Shield experience, the young South Australian produced one of the standout performances of Bangladesh's tour preparations.
Final scores:
Bangladesh — 263 & 54
Cricket Australia XI — 355
Result: Cricket Australia XI won by an innings and 38 runs.
