Abishek Porel Arrested in Case of Alleged Sexual Assault

Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter remanded to three days of police custody as investigation continues

Abishek Porel Arrested in Case of Alleged Sexual Assault
Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested in West Bengal in connection with a case involving allegations of sexual assault, criminal intimidation and other offences. The allegations have not been proven in court, and Porel remains an accused while the investigation continues. Porel was taken into custody by police in Hooghly after directions issued by the Calcutta High Court during proceedings in the case. Following his arrest, he was produced before a court and remanded to three days of police custody. What Has Been Alleged? The case stems from a complaint lodged by a medical student in June 2026. According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she and Porel had been in a relationship for several years and that he established a physical relationship with her after allegedly promising marriage. The complaint also contains allegations of intimidation and concerns relating to private photographs and videos. The complainant subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court over concerns regarding the progress of the investigation. During proceedings, the court directed police to continue efforts to apprehend the accused and take steps regarding electronic devices that could contain private material connected with the case. Porel has previously denied the allegations and indicated that he would respond further as the police investigation progressed. Porel’s Cricket Career The 23-year-old is regarded as one of Bengal's promising wicketkeeper-batters and has also represented Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Porel has played 32 first-class matches and 35 IPL matches, establishing himself as an attacking left-handed batter capable of playing at different positions in the order. He featured for Delhi Capitals during IPL 2026, but has not played competitive cricket since the conclusion of the tournament. The ongoing case now creates considerable uncertainty around his immediate cricketing future, with further developments dependent on the police investigation and subsequent court proceedings. Case Remains Under Investigation It is important to note that an arrest does not establish guilt. The accusations against Porel remain allegations at this stage, and no final determination has been made by a court. Authorities are continuing their investigation, while further legal proceedings will determine the next steps in the case.
